• Years 1 and 2

    Welcome to KS1!

Spring Term – There’s no place like this place!

Summer – I like to move it, move it!

We are contrasting localities this term.  We will be finding out about Madagascar and how it differs to the UK.  We will be naming continents and oceans, finding Madagascar on a map of the world and learning about the physical and human geography of the country.  In our DT lessons we will be designing and making a healthy snack to keep us fuelled on our imaginary journey to or from Madagascar.  We will be finding out where different fruit and vegetables come from and taste testing some fruits from around the world.

In our music lessons we will be exploring different styles of music from around the world and for PE we will be improving our balance and control with yoga and learning to orienteer.

Our PE days for this term our Thursday and Friday.

    Phonics in KS1

In KS1 class we have daily phonics sessions focusing on learning to read and write all sounds (Level 5 and 6) including alternative pronunciations.  We teach the children phonic rules and give them opportunities to spell and sort words based on these rules.  We follow the Twinkl SSP which is a rigorous progression of phonics skills using Letters and Sounds.  The program is supported by the Rhino Readers books that children will bring home to practise their reading skills at home as well as Oxford Reading Tree books which have been matched the Twinkl SSP.

The Phonics Play website has a variety of free games that you can play with your child to support blending letter sounds to read words.

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.
